Mahlon Miller and Marvin Newcomer quit their employment as an established RV manufacturer in 1968 to start the Newmar Corporation in the small town of Nappanee, Indiana. Their purpose, which began with the 1971 Kountry Aire fifth-wheel travel trailer, was to design, manufacture, and sell the finest quality recreational vehicles ever seen.
Newmar entered the Class A market in the 1980s with the intention of producing high-end motor coaches in limited quantities. The Mountain Aire and Dutch Star, two legendary coaches that are still in use today, were developed by the company in 1990.
In 2012, Newmar took the strategic decision to leave the fifth-wheel market, which had helped the firm develop decades earlier, and instead focus all of its resources on building the greatest Class A motor coaches in the world.
